Financial Aid

Paying for college can be a scary and overwhelming process.  I Know I Can is here to make this process easier for you by helping you apply for financial aid, research loans and find what types of financial aid you and your child are qualified for.

Where do I start?

In order to be eligible for financial aid, you MUST first complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
  1. Visit pin.ed.gov to apply for a Personal Identification Number (PIN).  It will act as an electronic signature, neccessary for completing the FAFSA.  It is a four digit number. Write this down somewhere safe.
  2. Visit fafsa.ed.gov to obtain your FAFSA application for completion.  (This application cannot be accessed or filed prior to January 1.)
I Know I Can offers FREE workshops to help you and your child complete the FAFSA. For a workshop schedule, E-Mail Us or check with your child's high school guidance counselors.

What types of financial aid are available to my child?

Now that you've completed the FAFSA, let's take a look at what types of financial assistance exist.
  • Scholarships
    • These are applied for and awarded on the basis of merit, skill and unique characteristics.  These do not get repaid, however, most scholarships require that you maintain a certain level of achievement. Visit our list of available scholarships.
  • Grants
    • Usually awarded on the basis of financial need.  These do not get repaid.
  • Work-Study
    • This method allows students to earn a paycheck for working a limited number of hours throughout the school year at the college they attend.
  • Loans
    • Many students and parents borrow money to help cover educational expenses.  Think of loans as an investment in your future.  Loans must be repaid with interest, usually after your education is completed.
